Chapter 1 Information that will be assessed:


Students will need to know the following properties:

ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTIES:
Associative Property of Addition: a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c EXAMPLE: 2 + (4 + 5) = (2 + 4) + 5
Associative Property of Multiplication: a(bc) = (ab)c EXAMPLE: 6(7y) = (6 * 7)y

COMMUTATIVE PROPERTIES:
Commutative Property of Addition: a + b = b + a EXAMPLE: 8 + 9 = 9 + 8
Commutative Property of Multiplication ab = ba EXAMPLE: 10(11) = 11(10)

PROPERTIES OF ZERO:
Multiplication Property of Zero: any number multiplied by zero has a product of 0
PROPERTIES OF ONE:
Multiplication Property of One: any number multiplied by one has the value of that original number
