7th Grade College Preparatory Mathematics

Dear Students,

Welcome to 7th grade College Preparatory Mathematics. I am delighted to be your math teacher and plan on inspiring their love for learning. I believe that the responsibility for learning is shared between the student, teacher and parent. As we communicate and work together, your mathematical knowledge will grow and your understanding will deepen.

As we begin this school year, you will be required to complete some review of basic skills. You will most likely recall many of these skills. Some clarity will be provided about the concepts, if gaps from the summer exist. We will then proceed into exploring the concepts below:

  1. The Number System
    1. Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers
  2. Expressions and Equations
    1. Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.
    2. Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations
  3. Ratios and Proportional Relationships
    1. Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems
  4. Geometry
    1. Draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationship between them.
    2. Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area and volume.
  5. Statistics and Probability
    1. Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population.
    2. Draw informal comparative inferences about two populations
    3. Investigate chance processes and develop, use and evaluate probability models.


Some of the materials used will include, but will not be limited to:
  1. Review sheets on basic Number System Algorithms
  2. Big Ideas Text
  3. Data Distributions (Probability)
  4. Holt – used as supplemental instruction for all units
  5. RM Math – interactive electronic program (will be used with Interactive White Board)
  6. Math ‘scool and Algebra’scool – dvd based program used to introduce new material as well as provide remedial learning activities for any weak skills
  7. On-line math practice: websites will be provided by teacher


The curriculum moves quite fast. I will strongly encourage you to stay current with all assignments and skills. I hold help sessions during lunch and recreation. Students interested in going-- should talk with me first, so that I can confirm the appointment. Students MUST obtain a pass from me for admittance. Lastly, I recommend that you contact me with questions, comments or concerns that arise via email: If computer access is not available, please send a note to school with the student, including a phone number and best time to reach the parent.

I follow the established grading scale, according to Birmingham Public Schools. Grading is composed mostly of in-class work, notebooks, projects, homework, quizzes and tests. Please check Power School regularly. I will up-date the grades weekly and will be notified when parents log-in to reference their child’s status. I will also require that you check and print your grades periodically.

I believe in the classroom as a "community of learners." My teaching style is structured and organized with an easy-to-follow system for class work and homework. This enables you to take charge of your learning, within this community. You are expected to come to class prepared and on time.

  • Post-Its, Elmer's glue, markers or colored pencils, $6.50 for Scholastic Math Magazine (EXACT CASH ONLY), graph paper, protractor, box of tissue, canister of antibacterial wipes

Upon entering the room, you will need to copy down the day's assignment in their planner and take out your homework with checking pen. Since organization is an essential life skill, I strongly recommend encouraging you to use your planner and keep an organized binder. Failure to do so will result in a help session with Mrs. Konen during lunch/recreation. Math assignments are given four days a week. Expectations to complete them on time are in place.


All homework assignments are to be turned in upon request. Not all assignments will be collected. Approximately three grades a week will be represented on Power School. If you are absent, you are still responsible for obtaining and completing missing assignments. Students absent on the day an assignment is due are expected to turn it in the day they return. Late assignments will receive a reduced grade. If you know of an upcoming absence or if you are out for an extended period of time please contact me immediately. Special assignments might be arranged if reasonable notice is given.


Excellent behavior is expected. Consequences for disruptive behavior are assigned in line with the Berkshire handbook. Notification of behavior issues is done in several ways: note, phone call, email, student phone call home, student email and Power School.
